Tom Cruise as Jack Harper in Oblivion
Director Joseph
Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) and the
producer of Rise of the Planet of the
Apes bring a new exciting science-fiction action adventure to the big
screen and it’s a real blast. No kidding, the film blasts us into a post
apocalyptic world of survival with drone shooting, dogfights, and special
effects all the way through.
Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher, Top Gun, Mission: Impossible) plays Jack Harper, one of the last humans on Earth due to a gruesome war sixty years ago that destroyed the moon and nearly destroyed the Earth. All the humans evacuated the planet. Jack and his communications officer, Victoria (Andrea Risebourough) remain on Earth to repair drones and monitor the activity on the planet. During one of Jack’s flights through what’s left of the planet, he discovers a dark truth about his past and what the humans really did during the war.

Oblivion was a very amusing and entertaining
movie as a whole. It had a complex story, impressive special effects, kickass
music score, that distinct Kosinski style used in Tron: Legacy, and great
performances by Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman (Olympus
Has Fallen, The Dark Knight
trilogy, Wanted), etc. Pretty much my
only problem with the film is the writing; it’s a little thin for such a
complex premise.
But
for what it’s worth, the movie is fun and will certainly entertain fans of
the classic science fiction flicks such as Star Wars, Alien, and Planet of the Apes. If you enjoyed any
of those films, you’ll most likely enjoy this flick. I personally wouldn’t say
it was better than movies like The
Avengers, Terminator 2, or Alien but I really liked the movie and
thought it was a great visual ride.
I’m glad I saw
it and had a great time. Hopefully some of the other exciting looking movies
coming out this year (Iron Man 3, Star Trek into Darkness, Elysium, Man of Steel) will satisfy just as much as this film, if not more.
